Jon Camp, Sr., known as “Joe Baby”, was born June 6, 1938 to Calvin and Mattie Camp in Cincinnati, Ohio and departed this life on February 1, 2020. He was the 12th of 13 children.
He graduated from Central High School in 1956, where he was a standout athlete and excelled in football, track, basketball and swimming. He later taught his sons how to swim. Jon, Sr., married Helen Watson in 1959. From this union two loving sons were born, Jon Jr. and Lester.
Jon, Sr. worked at Hocks Buick in Avondale, Ohio, for 18 years, and was dedicated and skilled in his craft, only missing 3 days of work during his tenure there. Later he began teaching Auto Body at Hughes High School where he remained for 6 years.
Jon, Sr. was also a very talented pool player, until he discovered golf. His passion for golf began in 1969. He was so talented he competed and won numerous local tournaments as well as winning tournaments up and down the East Coast. Fixing cars and golf were his true passions.
In 1981, he decided to venture into entrepreneurship, owing his own body shop. He opened and operated Camp’s Body Shop, in Evanston, Ohio, on Clarion Avenue for 26 years, along with his sons. Jon Sr. taught his sons how to operate and craft their skills in the collision business. Jon, Sr. was well known in Cincinnati for being fair and reasonable about fixing cars. He often repeated the saying "Mend It, Blend It and Send It" The shop outgrew the Clarion Avenue location, and moved to a much bigger facility on Dana Avenue. The facility was so nice, that Hertz Rental Car opened a location inside of Camp's Collision, the only Hertz in an African American He worked tirelessly to ensure the utmost quality to all of his customers.
Jon, Sr. loved his family and never missed a Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas breakfast until last year when his health began to fail.
He is survived by his loving sons Jon Jr., (DeeAnn) and Lester; grandchildren, Bobby, Leonard, Jonathan, Brandon and Christopher; his beautiful and loving sisters, Barbara Jones, Delilah Sloan, twin sisters Shirley Summerlin and Gerri Wallace; a nephew Wayne Sloan, with whom he shared a special relationship and a host of other nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
